MED Theatre was commissioned by national charity Plantlife to mentor local young people in the making of a short film about Atlantic Oak Woodland. They took inspiration from, and film within, the Atlantic Oak Woodland in Yarner Wood near Bovey Tracey.
What is it about woodlands that those who dwell in or near them love so much? What draws visitors into the forests to admire the trees and the vegetation that sits on the floor beneath?
MED Theatre’s Wild Nights young company were commissioned by national charity, Plantlife, to create a short film as part of a regional project, taking a deeper look into the temperate rainforest climate of Atlantic Oak woodlands in the South West of England. Thanks to National Lottery players, through funding from National Lottery Heritage Fund, this film will be shared across the region to help communicate with the general public the importance of our woodlands. ‘The Wood’ appeals to the hearts of audiences and asks them to join the conversation regarding saving our woodlands and protecting these natural environments, full of rare species, for future generations.
Filming took place in May 2019 with young people from the Dartmoor area. Natural England kindly gave us use of the Woodland Centre in Yarner Wood and we used this as a base to film over three days in Yarner and Pullabrook Woods.
The film was shot during the May half term and was launched on October 12th 2019 at Natural England’s Woodland Centre in Yarner Wood. Thank you to all of the young people involved and to Albert and the Natural England team and Rachel and Emily from Plantlife.
