Adder (2012)

The adder is Britain’s only venomous snake, and as such has always been regarded with a degree of fear and awe, which in turn has produced a wealth of folklore, not least on Dartmoor. Some of this folklore demonises the shy reptile, but the poignant tale of the girl who befriended an adder recorded from the granite country of the South West taps into another tradition where the snake is seen as a protector and healer. MED Theatre’s dance-theatre performance Adder weaved together three stories which suggest how important the snake is to our culture as well as to our ecology.
